"The Rudy Blues" was originally written in 1999, the year of Amadou Diallo, when Giuliani's arrogance and casual cruelty were simply too much to take. (For memories of those days, before his divorce, the prostate cancer, and his temporary redemption after 9/11, see "The Rudy Moment," an occasional column I wrote for a newsletter by Bob Howe.) I wrote a a second version three years ago, when I finally got sick of hearing what a "hero" he was. And now that he's flirting with a presidential run, it's time for Part III of the story.
| "I'm a hero!" | "You're from New York." |
| "Family values!" | "You're divorced." |
| "I brought down crime!" | "You're anti-gun." |
| "I executed criminals!" | "But you're pro-abortion." |
This song is actually a pastiche of "The Walkin' Blues," a classic performed by both Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters.
And here's a Ken Ficara bootleg: an MP3 of the original version of "The Rudy Blues," performed live at the now-defunct Sun Music Company in October, 1999, with Mike Skliar on guitar, Dr. Paul Brown on dobro, and Tom Ricciutti on bass.
