"The Rudy Blues" was originally written in 1999, the year of Amadou Diallo, when Giuliani's arrogance and casual cruelty were simply too much to take. (For memories of those days, before his divorce, the prostate cancer, and his temporary redemption after 9/11, see "The Rudy Moment," an occasional column I wrote for a newsletter by Bob Howe.) I wrote a a second version three years ago, when I finally got sick of hearing what a "hero" he was. And now that he's flirting with a presidential run, it's time for Part III of the story.

Woke up this morning, Rudy's back in the news He's going to run for President, now that gives me the blues Woke up this morning, Giuliani's back in the news He wants to run for president but this time he's gonna get the blues Some people say that he's off to Washington But the Christian fundamentalists are saying, think again Some people say Giuliani's going to run and win But he'll never convince the national Republicans
"I'm a hero!" "You're from New York."
"Family values!" "You're divorced."
"I brought down crime!" "You're anti-gun."
"I executed criminals!" "But you're pro-abortion."
He says, "Can't you see I'm a good Republican? "I ran my police force just like it was the Ku Klux Klan!"
He cheated on his wife and then gave her the boot But that's not good enough for Republicans like Newt He cheated and he lied and he gave jobs to his crooked friends But he'll have to do much more to impress the Republicans Poor deluded Rudy, still playing the hero Posing for photos in the pit down at Ground Zero Poor deluded Rudy still talking about 9/11
But it's been six years now and nothing's been done No help for rescue workers after what they've done Disasters in Iraq and Afghanistan And Rudy you supported the Republicans Yes you sold us out but they still won't make you president

This song is actually a pastiche of "The Walkin' Blues," a classic performed by both Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters.

And here's a Ken Ficara bootleg: an MP3 of the original version of "The Rudy Blues," performed live at the now-defunct Sun Music Company in October, 1999, with Mike Skliar on guitar, Dr. Paul Brown on dobro, and Tom Ricciutti on bass.
